Irene Luranah Pauline Aldridge (1860 – 1932) was an English opera singer. She performed in the United States and Europe. In 1896, she became one of the first Black opera singers to perform in major European opera houses. This helped open doors for other Black artists in opera.

Luranah and her sister Amanda Aldridge attended a boarding school in Ghent, Belgium. They studied there from 1875 to 1879. The school, called Les Dames de l’Instruction Chrétienne, aimed to educate young women. Luranah Aldridge also studied singing in Germany, England, and France. People said she had a "true contralto voice," which means a deep female singing voice. She had a very wide vocal range.

Early Opera Training

Luranah's singing talent was recognized early on. The famous composer Charles Gounod was very impressed by her. He told Augustus Harris, a theater manager, "Do you want to hear one of the most beautiful voices that exist? Very well! Give an audition to Mademoiselle Luranah Aldridge."

First Performances

Augustus Harris featured Luranah in a big concert in 1893. This was a Grand Wagner Orchestral Concert held at St. James’s Hall. He also chose her to play one of the Valkyries in Richard Wagner's famous opera series, "The Ring." Valkyries are mythical female figures in Norse mythology.

Singing in "The Ring"

Luranah sang in "The Ring" opera series in London. She performed in these shows in both 1898 and 1905. She continued to perform in London until the start of the First World War. After this, she became very ill with a condition called rheumatism. This made it difficult for her to move, and she could no longer perform.

Bayreuth Festival Experience

In 1896, Cosima Wagner, the wife of composer Richard Wagner, chose Luranah for a special role. Luranah was to appear in the second full production of "The Ring Cycle" at the famous Bayreuth Festival in Germany. This was a very important opportunity.

Falling Ill at Bayreuth

While rehearsing for the festival, Luranah became sick. She had to go to a nearby spa to get better. Because of her illness, she could not perform at the festival that year. Even though she seemed to have a good relationship with the Wagner family, she was not invited back to perform later.

Family and Later Life

Luranah Aldridge was the daughter of the famous actor Ira Aldridge. Her mother was Amanda von Brandt. Luranah was named after her grandmother, also called Luranah. Her sister was Amanda Ira Aldridge, who was also a British opera singer and composer.

Care from Her Sister

As Luranah's rheumatism got worse, her sister Amanda took care of her. In 1921, Amanda described Luranah as "very helpless" because of her illness. Luranah Aldridge passed away in 1932. She is buried in Gunnersbury Cemetery in London.
