Lusikkahaarukka facts for kids
The Lusikkahaarukka (say "LOO-see-kah-HAH-roo-kah") is a special folding spoon and fork all in one! People sometimes call it the LuHa for short. It's made of stainless steel, which means it's strong and won't rust. This handy tool is given to soldiers in the Finnish Army along with their mess kit (a set of dishes for eating outdoors). It's also super popular for camping and other outdoor adventures.
What is a Lusikkahaarukka?
The spoon part of the Lusikkahaarukka is a bit bigger than a normal soup spoon. This makes it really good for stirring food when soldiers cook their meals in the field using their mess kit. The fork part isn't used as much because most foods are easier to eat with the spoon.
When the Lusikkahaarukka is folded, it can fit into the Finnish army mess kit. However, soldiers often don't put it there because it can slip out and make noise. Finnish army soldiers are allowed to carry their own civilian puukkos (a type of Finnish knife). Everyone is expected to have one, so they don't need a separate knife with their spoon-fork.
A Bit of History
The idea for this spoon-fork tool first came from Imperial Germany around the late 1800s or early 1900s. It came to Finland in 1918 with a group of soldiers called the Jägers.
Today, the Lusikkahaarukka is made by a company called Hackman. It's one of the oldest pieces of equipment still used by the Finnish Army! These tools are very tough and last a long time. In fact, new soldiers today are still given Lusikkahaarukkas that were made during World War II.
