Lyanka's acting journey started by chance. When she was four, her mother was studying at the famous Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK), a top film school in Russia. One day, Lyanka was noticed in the school's hallways and was offered a part in a short film called One. The movie, based on a story by Ray Bradbury, won many awards in Europe.
Using a Stage Name
Early in her career, movie producers asked Lyanka to use the stage name Lyana Ilnitskaya. They thought this name would be more familiar to Russian audiences. At age six, she hosted a children's TV show called Tic-Tac.
Her first big role came in 1997 when she played Becky in the movie A Little Princess. Her performance was so good that she won Best Actress awards at two different film festivals for children.
When she turned 18, Lyanka decided to stop using her stage name. She began using her real name, Lyanka Gryu, as she started studying acting at the same university her mother attended.
