Lydia Nsekera is a very important sports leader from a country called Burundi. She was born on April 20, 1967. Since 2009, she has been a special member of the International Olympic Committee. This committee helps organize the Olympic Games! She has worked hard to make sports better, especially for women.

Lydia Nsekera's Sports Career
Lydia Nsekera has held many important roles in the world of sports. She has worked with both football and the Olympic Games. Her dedication has helped shape sports in Africa and around the globe.
Leading in Football
Lydia Nsekera was the president of the Football Federation of Burundi. She held this big job from 2004 to 2013. This meant she was in charge of football in her home country.
In 2012, she made history. She became the first woman to join the FIFA Council. The FIFA Council is a very important group that makes decisions for world football. She was first chosen for one year. Then, in 2013, she was elected for a full four-year term. This was also a first for a woman!
She served on the FIFA Council for eight years, until 2021. She tried to be elected again to represent Africa, but she did not win. Her successor, Isha Johansen, took her place.
Working with the Olympics
Lydia Nsekera is also the president of the Burundi National Olympic Committee. This committee helps athletes from Burundi get ready for the Olympic Games. She has tried twice to become the head of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA). This group represents Olympic committees across Africa. She lost both times to Mustapha Berraf.
She has made it her goal to improve the image of ANOCA. She wants to make sure the organization is seen as strong and fair.
Promoting Women in Sport
Currently, Lydia Nsekera leads the IOC Women in Sport Commission. This group works to encourage more women and girls to take part in sports. They also help women get leadership roles in sports organizations.
She also helps plan future Olympic Games. She is part of the groups that coordinate the Tokyo 2020 and Los Angeles 2028 Games. This means she helps make sure everything is ready for these huge events.
