Early Life and Education

Lydia Y. Nichols was born on November 29, 1992. She grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. She went to Loyola University New Orleans from 2010 to 2013. There, she earned a degree in English Language and Literature.

What Lydia Nichols Does

After college, Lydia Nichols worked at Exhibit Be in New Orleans. From June 2014 to April 2015, she helped organize a big outdoor art show. She worked with over 50 artists and managed the budget. She also created educational programs for the public.

In April 2015, she started working as an independent contractor. This means she works for herself. She helps art groups and other foundations create programs. She also researches cultural trends in different places. She still does this work today.

From April to September 2017, she worked at Prospect New Orleans. This is a large art event that happens every few years across the city. She helped develop public programs for visitors to enjoy.

Modern Maroon Blog

Modern Maroon is Lydia Nichols's own blog. She says it's a collection of writings that explore how modern art connects with ways Black people have survived and built their own lives, separate from government control.

She explains the name Modern Maroon using two ideas:

  • Modernity: This refers to the look and feel of the "First World" or "developed" countries. Think of tall skyscrapers, cars, and computers. These are symbols of how we live and communicate today.
  • Marronage: This is about people escaping difficult situations. It means leaving with no plan to return or join the group they left. Instead, they build new, independent lives for themselves.

Some of her recent blog posts have covered topics like:

  • "Culture in the Carceralocene: Keith Calhoun, Flozell Daniels, Chandra McCormick, and Mariah Moore"
  • "In Memoriam: Big Queen Kim Boutte of the Spirit of Fi Yi Yi"
  • "A Very Self-Centered Review of Jarvis DeBerry's 'I Feel to Believe: Collected Columns'"

Other Creative Work

Lydia Nichols's writings and cultural thoughts have been published in many places. These include 64 Parishes, The Lens, theGrio.com, Pelican Bomb, and Tribes Magazine.

She also hosts a podcast called Social Practice. The first episode talks about how things are marketed to people. It also looks at how some unfair systems and ideas in the world can influence what we see and buy.

Nichols is also working on a play called Don't look away. It's a dark comedy set in the southern United States in the early 22nd century. In the play, a climate disaster causes the city of New Orleans to disappear. She will continue working on this play while staying at A Studio in the Woods in 2021.

A Studio in the Woods is a special place for artists. It focuses on protecting forests and teaching about the environment through art. It is located near the Mississippi River in New Orleans.
