Lynching facts for kids
Lynching is when a group of people illegally kill someone without a fair trial. It's a very serious act where people take the law into their own hands, often believing the person they are attacking is guilty of a crime. However, the person never gets a chance to prove their innocence in a court.
This terrible practice has happened in many parts of the world. In the United States, lynchings were often used in the southern states, especially against African Americans. This happened during the time of slavery and even more so after slavery was ended. It continued during the period of civil rights activism, often carried out by groups like the Ku Klux Klan.
Lynching is wrong and against the law. It has led to the deaths of many people who might have been innocent. A very unfair part of lynching is that the people who committed these acts were rarely punished for their crimes.
