The Lynn Common Historic District is a special area in Lynn, Massachusetts. It includes the city's old town common and all the historic buildings around it. This common started way back in the late 1600s. But most of the buildings you see today were built in the 1800s. That's when the common became the beautiful park it is now.

Exploring Lynn Common

The common is a long, grassy space. It has North Common Street on one side and South Common Street on the other. A few smaller streets cut across it, dividing it into sections. On its eastern end, you'll find City Hall Square. To the west, it ends at Market Square. It's a great place to walk and see history.

A Look at the Homes

Many of the houses facing the common are very old. They were built in the 1800s and still look much like they did back then. These homes show off many different styles of architecture. You can see everything from Federalist designs to Colonial Revival homes. There are also many Queen Anne style houses, which are known for their unique shapes and details. Along North Common Street, you can also spot four Colonial Revival apartment buildings. These were built between 1900 and 1920.

Important Buildings to See

The district is home to several important public and religious buildings in Lynn. The main library building is here. It's so important that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places all by itself. The armory and St. Stephen's Memorial Episcopal Church are also in the district. They are also listed separately on the National Register. Just off the common to the east, you'll find the Lynn Memorial City Hall and Auditorium. This is where the city's government works.

A Historic Landmark

The Lynn Common Historic District was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. This means it's recognized as a very important historical area. It helps protect the common and its surrounding buildings for future generations.
