Lynn G. Schreyer is an American scientist who uses math to solve real-world problems. She is an expert in a field called applied mathematics. Her work often involves understanding how liquids and gases move through materials that have tiny holes, like sponges, soil, or rocks. This is called "porous media." Dr. Schreyer is a professor of mathematics and statistics at Washington State University. She became a full professor there in March 2021. She also used to lead a special group of scientists called the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Activity Group on Geosciences.

Education and Career Journey
Early Studies and Degrees
Lynn Schreyer started her college journey studying mechanical engineering at the University of New Mexico. She did very well, graduating with high honors in 1986. After that, she earned a master's degree in mechanical engineering from Northwestern University in 1988.
Switch to Mathematics
After her first master's degree, Dr. Schreyer decided to focus on mathematics. She went to Purdue University, where she earned a second master's degree in math in 1990. She then continued her studies and received her Ph.D. in mathematics from Purdue in 1994. Her main research project for her Ph.D. looked at how different materials mix and swell, especially when they have different layers.
Teaching and Leadership Roles
After finishing her Ph.D., Dr. Schreyer did more research at Purdue. Then, she became a professor at the University of Colorado Denver. She started as an assistant professor and became an associate professor there in 2002. In 2016, she moved to Washington State University, where she teaches today.
From 2004 to 2006, Dr. Schreyer was the leader of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Activity Group on Geosciences (SIAG-GS). This group brings together scientists who use math to study Earth's processes, like how water moves underground or how oil flows through rocks.
