Lyonville, South Dakota facts for kids
Lyonville is a small place in Brule County, South Dakota. It's called an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and buildings that isn't officially a town or city. It doesn't have its own local government like a mayor or city council. Instead, the county government takes care of things for Lyonville.
The Story of Lyonville
Lyonville began a long time ago, in 1886. This was when the area was "laid out," meaning people planned where streets and buildings would go. Before that, in 1882, a post office opened there. Post offices were very important back then. They were how people sent and received letters and packages. This post office stayed open for many years, until 1945. Lyonville was probably named after Charles Lyons. He was an early postmaster, someone who worked at the post office.
