Lyudmila Verbitskaya's Life and Work
Lyudmila Alekseevna Verbitskaya was born in Leningrad on October 17, 1936. Leningrad is now known as Saint Petersburg.
Becoming a Language Expert
She studied language and literature, which is called philology. She earned her highest degree from Leningrad State University in 1958. During her career, Lyudmila Verbitskaya studied how people speak Russian today. She looked at how words are used, how sentences are put together, and what words mean.
Leading a Major University
Lyudmila Verbitskaya became the head of Saint Petersburg State University. She was the rector from 1994 to 2008. After that, she became the president of the university, serving from 2008 until 2019.
Promoting the Russian Language
She also held other important roles. From 2013 to 2018, she was the leader of the Russian Academy of Education. She then became its Honorary President. Lyudmila Verbitskaya also led the Board of Trustees for the Russkiy Mir Foundation. This group works to share the Russian language and culture around the world. She also chaired the International Association of Russian Language and Literature Teachers (MAPRYAL). This organization helps teachers of Russian language everywhere.
She was also a close friend of Vladimir Putin.
Lyudmila Verbitskaya passed away in St. Petersburg on November 24, 2019. A big meeting for language experts was held in her memory in December 2020.

Lyudmila Verbitskaya received many awards for her work. These awards showed how much her contributions were valued.
