M'banza-Kongo is an important town located in northwestern Angola. It is the capital city of Zaire Province. For a long time, from 1570 to 1975, it was known as São Salvador in Portuguese. A river called the Luezi River flows through a valley to the south of the town.
M'banza-Kongo holds a special place in history. It was once the main home of the Manikongo, who was the powerful ruler of the Kingdom of Kongo.
A City of Kings
M'banza-Kongo was the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Kongo. This kingdom was a very important state in Central Africa. It existed from the 14th to the 19th century. The city was a center for trade, politics, and culture.
The Manikongo, the king of Kongo, lived and ruled from M'banza-Kongo. This made the city a powerful and busy place. Many important decisions for the kingdom were made here.
