Early Life and Career
Médéric Martin was born in Montreal, Quebec, on January 22, 1869. His father, Salomon Martin, was a carpenter. His mother was Virginie Lafleur. He went to St. Eustache College.
Later, he opened a cigar store in Montreal's East End. He became a popular politician, especially among French-speaking residents.
Serving in the Canadian Parliament
Martin was a member of the Liberal Party of Canada. He was elected to the House of Commons of Canada. This is where laws are made for all of Canada.
He represented the area of Sainte-Marie in Montreal. He served as a Member of Parliament from 1906 to 1917.
Montreal City Politics
Martin was also very active in city politics. He was first elected to the Montreal City Council in 1906. He represented the Papineau Ward.
He was re-elected in 1908. However, he lost his seat in 1910. He was elected again to the City Council in 1912.
Mayor of Montreal
In 1914, Médéric Martin was elected Mayor of Montreal. He won re-election in 1916, 1918, and 1921.
He lost the election in 1924 to Charles Duquette. But he was elected mayor again in 1926. In 1928, he was defeated by his rival, Camillien Houde.
Martin served as mayor for a total of 12 years. At that time, he was the longest-serving mayor in Montreal's history.
Changes During His Time as Mayor
During his time as mayor, several nearby towns joined Montreal. These included Notre-Dame-de-Grâce and many French-speaking areas in the east.
Montreal became a city with more French-speaking residents. Because of this, Martin ended an old tradition. Before him, the mayor's job would switch between English and French speakers. This practice has not returned since.
Later Political Role
In 1919, Martin was appointed to the Legislative Council of Quebec. This was a group that helped make laws for the province of Quebec. He represented the district of Alma. He served in this role until 1946.
Death and Legacy
Médéric Martin passed away on June 12, 1946. He was buried at the Notre Dame des Neiges Cemetery in Montreal.
