The Mérida flowerpiercer (Diglossa gloriosa) is a small, special bird that lives only in Venezuela. It belongs to a group of birds called Thraupidae, which are often known as tanagers. This bird gets its name "flowerpiercer" because it has a unique beak that helps it get nectar from flowers.

These birds live in cool, misty mountain areas. You can find them in subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. These are forests high up in the mountains where it's often wet. They also live in high-altitude shrubland, which are bushy areas found on mountainsides.

What Makes the Mérida Flowerpiercer Special?

The Mérida flowerpiercer is endemic to Venezuela. This means it is found naturally nowhere else in the world! It lives only in the Andes mountains in western Venezuela, especially around the Mérida region.

How Do Flowerpiercers Eat?

Flowerpiercers have a special beak that looks like a hook. Instead of putting their whole beak into a flower like a hummingbird, they use their hooked upper beak to pierce the base of the flower. This creates a small hole. Then, they use their tongue to drink the sweet nectar inside. They also eat small insects and berries.

Where Does It Live?

The Mérida flowerpiercer prefers to live in high places. It likes cloud forests and bushy areas between 2,000 and 3,600 meters (about 6,500 to 11,800 feet) above sea level. These habitats are often covered in mist and have lots of unique plants and insects.

Is the Mérida Flowerpiercer Safe?

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the Mérida flowerpiercer as "Least Concern" (LC). This is good news! It means that for now, this bird is not considered to be in danger of disappearing. However, it's always important to protect their mountain homes so they can continue to thrive.
