Early Life and Political Start
Krishnan Nair was born in 1870 into the Mannath family, who were landlords in the Malabar district of the Madras Presidency. He went to school in Malabar and then studied at the Government College in Calcutta and Madras Christian College. He later studied law at the Madras Law College to become a lawyer.
When he was young, Krishnan Nair joined the Indian National Congress, a major political group. He was elected to the Madras Legislative Council in 1904 and served there until 1910. His two sons also became high-ranking government officers.
Serving as Diwan of Travancore
In 1914, Krishnan Nair was chosen to be the Diwan of Travancore. A Diwan was like a chief minister or prime minister for a princely state in India. He took over from Sir P. Rajagopalachari. Krishnan Nair held this important position in Travancore from 1914 to 1920.
Joining the Justice Party
After his time as Diwan, Krishnan Nair joined the Justice Party in 1920. He was very successful in elections, winning in both 1920 and 1923.
Later, when the Justice Party worked with another group called the Swarajya Party against the Simon Commission, the Governor of Madras, Lord Goschen, appointed Krishnan Nair as his law member. This was a way to get the Justice Party's support. As the law member, Krishnan Nair supported a bill (a proposed law) by Muthulakshmi Reddy that aimed to bring social change.
Later Life and Honors
Krishnan Nair passed away in 1938. For his important work and service, he was given a special honor in January 1930. He was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire, which is why he was known as "Sir" Krishnan Nair.
