Jeffrey Miree (born on July 7, 1962), known as MC Jazzy Jeff, is an American rapper. He was a member of the famous hip-hop group Funky 4 + 1. He was active in music from 1979 to 2002.
MC Jazzy Jeff is sometimes called "Original M.C. Jazzy Jeff." This helps people know he was active before DJ Jazzy Jeff from the group Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. Jeffrey Miree started his music journey in 1976 with the group Funky 4 + 1. This group made history! They were the first hip-hop group to perform on national television. This happened on the show Saturday Night Live in 1981. They performed their popular song "That's the Joint."
Solo Career and Name Rights
After Funky 4 + 1 broke up in 1983, MC Jazzy Jeff started a solo career. He signed a deal with Jive Records, a record company. In 1985, he released his album called On Fire. A song from this album, "King ...", became quite popular. He finished a second album in 1987, but Jive Records never released it.
Around the same time, Jive Records signed another artist named Jeffrey Townes. He was known as DJ Jazzy Jeff. Jeffrey Townes teamed up with Will Smith, and they became DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince. Their first album, I'm the DJ, He's the Rapper, came out in 1988.
In 1994, MC Jazzy Jeff went to court against Jive Records. He wanted to make sure he had the rights to use the name Jazzy Jeff. He won the case, which meant he kept the rights to his stage name.
