MOAP facts for kids
MOAP (which stands for Mobile Oriented Applications Platform) was a special type of software system used in mobile phones. It was created for NTT DoCoMo's FOMA service in Japan. Think of it like the main operating system that helped phones run their basic features and apps.
One important thing about MOAP was that it had a "closed" design. This meant that people outside of NTT DoCoMo, like other companies or app developers, couldn't easily create their own new apps for phones using MOAP. You also couldn't install apps from other places, which was different from other phone systems like S60 or UIQ.
What Are the MOAP Versions?
There were two main types of MOAP software platforms:
- MOAP(S) – This version was used on phones that ran on the Symbian operating system. Many phone makers, such as Fujitsu, Sony Ericsson Japan, Mitsubishi, and Sharp, used MOAP(S) for their phones. At first, it was a closed system, meaning developers couldn't easily build apps for it. However, later on, it became more open. It was released as open-source software, which meant that its code was made available for others to use and change, thanks to the Symbian Foundation.
- MOAP(L) – This second version was used on phones that ran on the Linux operating system. Companies like Panasonic and NEC used MOAP(L) for their mobile devices. Unlike MOAP(S) which later became open, MOAP(L) remained a closed system. This meant that outside developers still couldn't create new software for it.
