MUFG Bank as we know it today is the result of several other banks joining together over the years. This is called a merger.
How was MUFG Bank created?
The bank was officially formed on January 1, 2006. It was created when two large Japanese banks, the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi and UFJ Bank, merged into one.
When it first started, it was called the Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi UFJ. People often called it BTMU for short. In 2018, the name was changed to the simpler MUFG Bank.

MUFG Bank is a "megabank," which is a name given to the three largest banks in Japan. The other two are Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and Mizuho Bank.
For many years, MUFG Bank has been ranked as the largest bank in Japan. It is also one of the largest banks in the entire world.
