Understanding the Maa-nulth Treaty
The Maa-nulth First Nations worked for many years to create a special agreement. This agreement is called the Maa-nulth First Nations' Final Agreement. It is a modern-day treaty that helps define their rights and responsibilities. This treaty is a big step in the BC Treaty Process.
Signing the Agreement
The final version of the treaty was agreed upon on December 9, 2006. This was a very important day for the Maa-nulth nations. After this, the agreement needed to be officially approved.
Approving the Treaty
The Maa-nulth First Nations members voted on the treaty in 2007. Most of the members voted to accept the agreement. About 80 percent of those who voted were in favor. The government of British Columbia also approved the treaty. This approval happened in November 2007. The treaty then became official.
Why This Treaty Is Important
The Maa-nulth Final Agreement was a historic moment. It was the first modern treaty for Vancouver Island. It was also the second treaty completed under the BC Treaty Process. This agreement helps the Maa-nulth nations manage their lands and resources. It also supports their self-governance.
