- Toquaht First Nation
- Uchucklesaht Tribe
- Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ (Ucluelet First Nation)
Understanding the Treaty Process
A modern-day treaty is a special agreement between Indigenous nations and the governments of Canada and British Columbia. These treaties help define and protect the rights, lands, and resources of Indigenous peoples. They are like a formal promise for how everyone will work together.
The Maa-nulth Treaty Agreement
The Maa-nulth First Nations worked for many years on their treaty. This agreement is called the Maa-nulth Final Agreement. It was a big step in the BC Treaty Process, which is a way for Indigenous groups in British Columbia to make treaties.
The final steps for the Maa-nulth treaty happened in 2006 and 2007:
- On December 9, 2006, the agreement was "initialled." This means the leaders officially signed off on it, showing they agreed to the terms.
- In the summer and fall of 2007, the members of the Maa-nulth First Nations voted on the treaty. This is called "ratification," where the community gives its approval.
- In October 2007, all five First Nations voted to accept the Final Agreement. Almost 80% of those who voted were in favour of the treaty.
- The government of British Columbia also passed laws to approve the treaty in November 2007. This made the treaty official under provincial law.
The Maa-nulth Final Agreement was a very important moment. It was the first modern treaty completed on Vancouver Island. It was also the second treaty finished through the BC Treaty Process. This agreement helps the Maa-nulth First Nations have more control over their lands, resources, and future.
