History of Mabelle
Mabelle began in 1906 as a stop on the Wichita Valley railway line. On December 13 of that year, a post office opened. It was named Mabelle after the daughter of a local resident, J. T. Thompson.
By 1920, Mabelle had grown to include a train station, several shops, and a Sunday school. About 58 people lived there. Even after a strong tornado hit the town around 1923, Mabelle continued to be a small trading center. In 1940, the community still had a post office and a few stores, with a population of 35. The post office closed around 1962.
The population of Mabelle changed over the years. In 1980, ten people lived there, and by 1990, it was six. In 2000, the population was reported as nine.
Elvis Presley's Visit to Mabelle
On April 25, 1955, the famous singer Elvis Presley, along with his bass player Bill Black and guitarist Scotty Moore, had an unexpected stop in Mabelle. They were on their way to a concert in Seymour, Texas, to help raise money for the local volunteer fire department.
After performing in Wichita Falls, they ran out of gas near Mabelle. Once they refueled in Mabelle, they continued their journey. They arrived at the Seymour high school auditorium late, after most of the audience had left. However, Elvis and his band still performed for the few people who remained.
