MacDowell Professor of Greek facts for kids
The Professorship of Greek is a special teaching position at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. It's like being the main teacher for the subject of Greek language and culture. This important role was renamed the MacDowell Professor of Greek to honor Douglas MacDowell, who was a former professor there.
A Long History of Greek Studies
The study of Greek has been important at the University of Glasgow for a very long time. Back in the days of King James VI of Scotland, university teachers were called Regents. These Regents were in charge of teaching Greek.
Sometimes, one of these Regents was even called the Professor of Greek, starting around 1581. The official position of Professor of Greek was formally created in 1704.
The MacDowell Gift
After Professor Douglas MacDowell retired in 2001, the university decided not to fill the Greek teaching position right away. However, when Professor MacDowell passed away, he left a very generous gift to the university. This gift was over £2 million.
This money was used to bring back the important teaching role. The first person to hold the newly named MacDowell Chair in Greek was appointed in 2012.
