Macarthur Square is a very big shopping centre located in Campbelltown, New South Wales, Australia. It first opened its doors on August 29, 1979. The shopping centre was built by Lend Lease Corporation and GPT. It is right next to the Macarthur Railway Station, which is where trains on the Airport & South Line end their journey.
Macarthur Square has grown a lot over the years. In 2005, a huge expansion costing $160 million made it much bigger. Its floor area grew from 29,000 to 90,000 m2 (310,000 to 970,000 sq ft), making it one of the largest shopping places in Sydney. A further upgrade in 2017 increased its size even more, reaching 107,000 m2 (1,150,000 sq ft) of retail space.

How Macarthur Square Started
Macarthur Square officially opened in 1979. The Hon. Paul Landa, a government minister, was there for the opening. It was planned to be a major shopping hub for the Macarthur area. This area in south-western Sydney was growing quickly.
In the 1960s, the NSW State Planning Authority bought a lot of land around Campbelltown. They created a plan in 1973 for the area's development. This plan helped set up a "growth centre" with money from both state and national governments. The Macarthur Development Board was created to manage this growth. They bought and sold land, built industrial areas, and developed the Macarthur Square shopping centre.
What You Can Find at Macarthur Square
Macarthur Square has many different stores and places to visit. You can find a three-floor David Jones department store. There are also big stores like Big W, Target, Coles, and Woolworths. Other popular shops include EB Games Australia, Gametraders, and Smiggle.
The centre also has a fun outdoor area called "Kellicar Lane." This part opened in November 2005 during a big expansion. It has many restaurants and entertainment options. Above Kellicar Lane, there is a food court. This food court has large glass windows. From here, you can look out over Kellicar Lane, Campbelltown, and the beautiful countryside around it.
Recent Upgrades in 2016 and 2017
A major upgrade costing $240 million happened between 2016 and 2017. This development brought many new features to Macarthur Square.
- The Coles supermarket was moved and made new.
- The David Jones store was completely redeveloped.
- A new H&M store was added.
- A new fresh food hall and a dining terrace were created.
- About 45 new specialty stores opened.
Later in 2017, a new Aldi supermarket and a full Harris Scarfe store also opened. These additions helped Macarthur Square remain the most important shopping centre in the Macarthur region. However, the Harris Scarfe store has since closed down.
