Mackie's Limited, also known as Mackie's of Scotland, is a company from Scotland that makes delicious ice cream and confectionery (sweets). Their main base is in Rothienorman, Aberdeenshire. The company started way back in 1912 as a dairy farm, raising cows for milk.
In 1986, Mackie's began making ice cream. They later sold their milk delivery business in 1997. In 2009, Mackie's teamed up with the Taylor family to make potato crisps called Mackie's at Taypack. However, in 2022, the Taylor family bought Mackie's share of the crisp business. Mackie's also started making chocolate on their farm in Aberdeenshire in 2014.

Making Delicious Ice Cream
Mackie's of Scotland makes all its ice cream right on their family farm. They use fresh, whole milk from their own cows. The farm has about 330 cows. These cows help produce over 10 million litres of ice cream every year!
Popular Ice Cream Flavors
Mackie's offers many different ice cream flavors. Their Classic range includes Traditional, Honeycomb, Chocolate, Organic, and Raspberry Ripple. For those who like richer tastes, the Indulgent range has Salted Caramel, Madagascan Vanilla, and Chocolate Orange & Honeycomb. Mackie's first started making ice cream in 1986. Their Traditional flavor ice cream is the most popular in Scotland.
Creating Tasty Chocolate
Since 2014, Mackie's of Scotland has also been making chocolate on their farm. They create five different flavors. These chocolate flavors are inspired by their popular ice cream range. You can find Traditional, Honeycomb, Orange, Dark, and Mint chocolate bars.
Powering the Farm with Green Energy
Mackie's of Scotland is a leader in using renewable energy. This means they use natural sources like wind and sun to create power. They installed their first large wind turbine in 2005. They had even tried a smaller one back in 1983. The farm actually produces more than twice the energy it needs. They send the extra power back to the UK electricity grid.
Wind and Solar Power
The farm's main source of clean energy is wind. They have four large wind turbines. These turbines can produce a total of 3 megawatts of power. Each year, the wind turbines generate enough energy to power over 2,000 UK homes.
Mackie's also uses solar power. They have a 10-acre field filled with solar panels. These panels can generate 1.8 megawatts of electricity. There are also smaller solar panels on the roof of their cow barn. Solar panels work well in the sunnier summer months. This helps when there might be less wind.
Heating with Biomass
The farm also has a biomass plant. This plant creates heat for the farm's offices and houses. It produces an extra 400 kilowatts of heating power.
Between 2021 and 2022, Mackie's installed a new cooling system. This system uses heat from the biomass boiler to freeze the ice cream. It uses a natural gas called ammonia to cool things down. This new system is much better for the environment.
Mackie's Ice Cream Shop
In 2017, Mackie's opened its very first ice cream shop. It is called Mackies 19.2. You can find it in Marischal Square, Aberdeen. The shop's name comes from its location. It is exactly 19.2 miles away from the family farm!
