From 1915 until 1971, a railway line passed right through Maclennan. This line was called the Catlins River Branch. Trains used to carry goods and people through the village. Who Was Maclennan Named After?

The village, along with a nearby mountain range and river, got its name from an early settler. His name was Murdoch Maclennan. He was one of the first people to settle in this area.
