Macri Triangle

Macri Triangle is a small park in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York City. It covers about 0.57 acres (0.23 hectares) of land. You can find it where Meeker Avenue, Union Avenue, and Metropolitan Avenue meet.

How Macri Triangle Was Formed

This park was created in 1946. At that time, a big highway called the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway was being built. To make way for the highway, some buildings were taken down. Meeker Avenue was also extended to help people get around the new highway.

As the highway cut through the streets, it left behind some small, triangle-shaped pieces of land. These pieces were too small to build new houses or shops on. So, the city decided to turn them into public spaces, like parks or plazas. Macri Triangle is one of these special triangular parks.

Who Was Luigi A. Macri?

In 1971, the City Council officially named this park "Macri Square." It was named to honor a man named Luigi A. Macri (1909–1962). He lived in Williamsburg and was a very active member of his community.

Luigi A. Macri was especially dedicated to the local American Legion Post 1751. This group helped take care of a memorial inside the park that honors those who served in the Second World War. Naming the park after him was a way to remember his contributions to the community and his support for the war memorial.
