What Does Macuspana Mean?

The exact meaning of the name Macuspana is not fully known, but there are a few interesting ideas:

  • Some think it comes from the Nahuatl words Macui-chpana. This could mean "place of the five sweepings" or "place of the five cleansings."
  • Another idea is that it comes from the Zoque words Macu-pane. This might mean "place where the priest goes."
  • A simpler idea suggests it's a mix of the names Marcos and Juana. These might have been the names of the people who first started the settlement.
