Madeline is a very small place in Lassen County, California. It is known as an "unincorporated community." This means it does not have its own local government. Instead, it is managed by the county.
In 2020, only 21 people lived in Madeline. It is located about 45 miles (72 km) north-northeast of Susanville. Madeline sits high up, at 5,321 feet (1,622 meters) above sea level.
A Glimpse into Madeline's Past
Madeline has a history tied to its post office. The first post office opened here in 1875. It closed a few years later in 1878. It reopened in 1879 and closed again in 1882.
The post office started up once more in 1887. In 1902, it even moved to a new spot. Today, the zip code for Madeline is 96119.
Madeline was also an important stop for trains long ago. It was on the Nevada-California-Oregon Railway line. This railway was later taken over by the Southern Pacific Railroad. Now, the railway is no longer in use.
