Madeline and the Gypsies is a popular children's picture book. It was written by Ludwig Bemelmans and features his famous character, Madeline. The book was first published in 1959 by Viking Press.
What Happens in the Story?
The adventure begins when Pepito, who is the son of the Spanish Ambassador, invites Madeline and her classmates to a special carnival. This carnival is run by a group of people often called Gypsies, who are also known as Romani people.
During the carnival, a sudden rainstorm causes a lot of confusion. In all the rush, Miss Clavel and the other girls accidentally lose sight of Madeline and Pepito. The two children are left behind on the Ferris wheel!
Madeline and Pepito then become guests of the Romani people. Soon, they even become part of the carnival's exciting shows themselves.
