The Madison Hotel is a fancy hotel located in Downtown Memphis, Tennessee, United States. It is special because it is built inside a historic building that used to be a bank. This building was once known as the Tennessee Trust Bank building.
History of the Building
The Tennessee Trust building was finished in 1905. It was 14 stories tall. This made it one of the first "skyscrapers" in downtown Memphis.
The building was designed by two architects, Charles O. Pfeil and George M. Shaw. They were famous for making buildings that looked grand and classic. Their designs often had lots of detailed decorations.
Inside the building, there was a very large underground vault. This vault is now used as the gym for the Madison Hotel guests. The building also has a special scroll pattern on its west side. You can see similar patterns on other old buildings in Memphis designed by Shaw & Pfeil.
For example, they also designed the Memphis Fire Engine House #1 (built in 1910). They also designed the Memphis Police Station (built in 1911). Both of these buildings are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Tennessee Trust Building itself was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it is an important historical place.
Becoming a Hotel
In 2002, a company called Unison Hotel Co. bought the old bank building. It was starting to get old and needed repairs. The company decided to turn it into a luxury hotel.
They worked hard to change the building. It became a beautiful hotel with 110 rooms. This is how the historic Tennessee Trust building became the Madison Hotel.
