Madog Fychan facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Madog Fychan was an important person in Wales during the 1200s. He was part of a powerful family known as the Princes of Powys Fadog. Even though he never became a prince himself, he was the brother of Gruffydd Maelor II, who was a prince.

Madog Fychan was known for his strong alliances. In 1245, he joined forces with Dafydd ap Llywelyn to fight against English control in Wales. Later, in 1258, he supported Llywelyn ap Gruffydd when Llywelyn claimed the important title of Prince of Wales. Madog Fychan passed away in December 1269.

Who Was Madog Fychan?

Historians sometimes find it tricky to figure out the exact family tree for people from a long time ago. For Madog Fychan, some old records say he was Madog Fychan ap Madog ap Gruffydd. This means he was the son of Madog and the grandson of Gruffydd Maelor I, who was a Prince of Powys Fadog. These records suggest he lived from about 1230 to 1269.

Family Connections

Other family records suggest a different story. They place another generation in between, making Madog Fychan the son of someone called Madog Crypl. However, it is more likely that Madog Crypl's son was Gruffydd. This Gruffydd was then followed by Gruffydd Fychan II, who was the father of the famous Welsh leader, Owain Glyndŵr.

So, while there's a little bit of mystery about his exact parentage, it is generally accepted that Madog Fychan was the brother of Gruffydd Maelor II. This connection made him a key figure in the powerful Powys Fadog family.
