Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Magda Peligrad is a famous mathematician and statistician from Romania. She is known for her work in probability theory, which is a branch of mathematics that studies chance and uncertainty. She has done important research on advanced math topics like central limit theorems and stochastic processes.

Today, Magda Peligrad works at the University of Cincinnati in the United States. There, she holds a special title called Distinguished Charles Phelps Taft Professor of Mathematical Sciences. This means she is a very respected professor in the math department.

Her Journey in Math

Magda Peligrad earned her Ph.D. in 1980 from the Center of Statistics of the Romanian Academy. A Ph.D. is the highest degree you can get at a university. After that, she continued her work in mathematics.

By 1983, she was working in Italy at the Sapienza University of Rome. Then, in 1984, she moved to the University of Cincinnati. Since 1988, she has helped seven students complete their doctoral studies. This means she guided them through their advanced research projects.

Magda Peligrad also helped write a book called Functional Gaussian Approximation for Dependent Structures. She wrote this book with two other researchers, Florence Merlevède and Sergey Utev. It was published in 2019 by Oxford University Press.

Awards and Recognition

In 1995, Magda Peligrad received a special honor. She was chosen as a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. Being a Fellow means she is recognized as a leading expert in her field.

She also helped other women in math and science. In 1990, she represented the Institute of Mathematical Statistics on a committee that supported women in eight different math and statistics groups.

To celebrate her 60th birthday and her amazing work, a special conference was held in her honor in Paris in 2010. Researchers from four universities in Paris organized this event. It focused on her research in "limit theorems for dependent data," which are important ideas in probability. In 2004, she was named a Taft Professor, which is another sign of her high standing at the University of Cincinnati.
