Magdalena Álvarez Arza (born February 15, 1952) is a Spanish politician and professor. She is known for her work as Spain's Minister of Public Works from 2004 to 2009. In this role, she was in charge of major projects like roads, railways, and ports.
She was born in San Fernando, a city in the Province of Cádiz in Spain. As a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), she represented Málaga Province in Spain's government.
Early Life and Career
Before entering politics, Magdalena Álvarez focused on her education and work in economics. She earned a doctorate degree in Economic and Business Science from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
For many years, she was a professor of Economics. She taught at several schools, including the Spanish National Open University from 1977 to 1990.
In 1979, she began working for the Spanish government as a tax inspector. She held several important positions in the Ministry of Finance over the years.
Career in Politics
Magdalena Álvarez's political career began in the region of Andalusia. She was elected to the Andalusian parliament representing Málaga. In 1994, she became the Minister of the Economy for the government of Andalusia, also known as the Junta de Andalucía.
In the 2004 general election, she was the top candidate on the Socialist party's list for Málaga. After the Socialists won the election, the new Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, appointed her as the Minister of Public Works for the entire country.
She was re-elected in 2008 and continued in her role as minister. Her time as Minister of Public Works ended in April 2009, when José Blanco took over the position.
