Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Magdalene Stirling (born in 1765, died in 1846) was a talented Scottish composer. She is most famous for a collection of her music called Twelve Tunes Composed by Miss Stirling of Ardoch, which she had printed privately in 1796.

Meet Magdalene Stirling, the Composer

Magdalene was the youngest of five daughters. She was born in a place called Ardoch in Perthshire, Scotland. Her parents were Christian Erskine and Sir William Stirling, who was the 4th Baronet of Ardoch. A baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family.

Her Musical Friends

Magdalene was good friends with two famous musicians, Niel and Nathaniel Gow. They were a father and son who were well-known for their fiddle music. The Gow family even helped publish some of Magdalene's compositions. Sometimes, when her music was published, it didn't always have her full name. Instead, it might say "as composed by Miss Stirling of Ardoch." This still let people know who wrote the beautiful tunes!
