The History of Magewappa
How the Craft Began
The first Magewappa items were made by woodcutters in the Odate area. They used a special type of wood called Akita Cedar. This wood has a very straight grain, which means the wood fibers run in neat, parallel lines.
Passing Down the Tradition
The leader of Odate Castle, Nishiie Satake, encouraged his soldiers to learn and use this craft. This helped the tradition grow strong. From the end of the Edo period (which was a long time ago in Japanese history) until today, the skills for making Magewappa have been passed down through many generations.
Magewappa Today
For a while, plastic products became very popular and cheap. This made it hard for some Magewappa craftspeople to continue their work. However, more and more people are now starting to appreciate real quality and handmade items. Magewappa is a perfect example of this kind of high-quality craftsmanship.
How Magewappa is Made
Caring for the Forests
For over 400 years, the people in the Odate area have taken great care of their forests. They plant Japanese cedar trees and work hard every year to keep the forests healthy. This includes weeding, pruning branches, and thinning out trees. This careful work helps protect the environment for future generations.
Choosing the Right Trees
Finding the perfect wood for Magewappa is very difficult. If you plant 400 young Akita cedar trees, fewer than 30 might be good enough to use for these products. Only Akita cedar trees that are over 100 years old can be bent correctly. These trees must also have survived the very harsh weather in northern Japan. If a tree has even a small knot or a slight change in color, it cannot be used. This shows how special each piece of Magewappa wood is.
