Discovering Magnolia Park's History
Plans to create a park in the Hillsboro part of the Tanasbourne neighborhood started around 2003. People wanted a nice green space for the community.
In August 2007, the city of Hillsboro officially approved the building of this new park. They also chose its name: Magnolia Park. The construction project cost about $1 million. A company called Paul Brothers Incorporated did the building work.
The money for building the park came from special fees. These are called "system development fees" and are charged by the city of Hillsboro. After ten months of construction, Magnolia Park officially opened on September 11, 2008. The building work was actually finished a bit earlier, in August. This park was the very first in Hillsboro to have a water play area. It was also the first to include special art as part of its design.
Fun Things to Do at Magnolia Park
Magnolia Park is about 3.11 acres big. It is the city's park located furthest to the east. The park is found in the Tanasbourne neighborhood. A local store, Trader Joe's, has even "adopted" the park. This means they help keep it clean and tidy as part of Hillsboro's adopt-a-park program.
Magnolia Park is located between Cornell and Walker roads. It is surrounded by shops, a retirement community, and homes.
Play and Water Fun
One of the most exciting features is the water fountain. It's designed for children to play in and cool off on warm days. This water feature is at ground level. It's decorated with beautiful mosaic art. The art looks like it changes color when it gets wet! This seasonal fountain is twenty-five feet long. Its mosaic design includes names and pictures of magnolia trees. There are also boulders with water jets that spray water.
The park also has great play equipment. There are two main structures. One is perfect for younger children, under five years old. The other is for older kids. You'll also find swings and a slide. The whole playground area is about 5,000 square feet!
Sports and Activities
If you love sports, Magnolia Park has something for you! There is a half-size basketball court where you can shoot hoops. There is also one tennis court for playing tennis. The park has open grass areas, perfect for running around or playing games. There are also walking paths if you just want to stroll.
Nature and Green Spaces
Magnolia Park is also a beautiful place to enjoy nature. It has 180 trees, including five different kinds of magnolia trees. Many of these trees are grouped together in a lovely grove. The park also has more than 1,000 flowers, adding lots of color. About 68,000 square feet of the park is covered in soft green lawn.
You'll also find a special rain garden here. This garden is designed to collect rainwater. It helps to improve the local watershed, which is good for the environment.
Picnic and Relaxation
There is a covered picnic area at the park. It's a great spot to have lunch or a snack with friends and family. The city's parks department allows people to rent out this picnic shelter for events.
