Discovering Mahahual
Mahahual is a wonderful place to explore! It's known for its soft, sandy beaches where you can relax under grass-thatched shelters called palapas. Just off the coast, you'll find part of the amazing Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. This is the second-largest coral reef system in the world, full of colorful fish and marine life!
What to See and Do
The village is only about 3 kilometers (less than 2 miles) from the Costa Maya cruise port. You can often see large cruise ships from the village! Mahahual has many hotels, fun bars, tasty restaurants, and unique shops. It's a great spot to enjoy the sun, sand, and sea.
Mahahual's Growth and Future
In 2010, about 920 people lived in Mahahual. The village is growing quickly and becoming an even bigger tourist destination. There are plans for new developments, including a future airport and a larger dock for more cruise ships.

A new area called New Mahahual is being built just inland from the cruise port. When cruise ships are in port, the village becomes very busy with visitors exploring all it has to offer.
Village Leadership
In April 2020, the mayor of Mahahual, Obed Durón Gomez, passed away while traveling to a nearby town. Leaders like Mayor Gomez play an important role in guiding the growth and well-being of their communities.
