Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mahan is a small, quiet place in Texas County, located in the state of Missouri in the United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community," which means it's a group of homes and buildings that isn't officially a city or town.

Discovering Mahan

This peaceful spot sits at an elevation of about 1,309 feet (399 meters) above sea level. It's a place with a bit of history, even if it's not a bustling city.

The Story of Mahan's Name

Mahan got its name from a post office that opened there a long time ago. In 1903, a post office was set up in the community. The person in charge of this post office, called a postmaster, decided to name the place after her husband, Sam Mahan. The post office served the community for about nine years before it closed in 1912.

Finding Mahan on the Map

Mahan is located in a rural part of Missouri. You can find it near two state roads: Missouri Route 137 and Missouri Route V. If you're looking at a map, Mahan is about one mile south of another small place called Oscar. It's also about four miles north of Raymondville.

Mahan Cemetery

Just about one mile east of where Mahan is located, along Route V, you'll find the Mahan Cemetery. This is a quiet place where people from the community have been laid to rest over the years.
