Maharaj Kishan Bhan (born November 9, 1947 – died January 26, 2020) was an important Indian doctor and scientist. He was a pediatrician, meaning he specialized in children's health. He also worked as a clinical scientist, doing research to improve medical treatments.
Dr. Bhan earned his medical degrees from top colleges in India. He did a lot of research on diseases that cause diarrhea and on how to keep children healthy through good nutrition. He focused on health issues that affect many people. He also led the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER).

Developing the Rota Viral Vaccine
One of Dr. Bhan's biggest achievements was helping to create a special vaccine. This vaccine helps protect children from the Rotavirus. Rotavirus is a common cause of severe diarrhea in young children. He worked with a company called Bharat Biotech International to develop this important vaccine.
Leading Science in India
Dr. Bhan held a very important position in the Indian government. He was the Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology. This department helps guide science and technology efforts in India. He served in this role until 2012.
He also helped start a new organization called BIRAC. This group helps turn scientific discoveries into useful products. It encourages companies and scientists to work together. This helps create new technologies and medicines in India.
Awards and Recognition
Dr. Bhan received many awards for his amazing work. In 1990, he was given the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology. This is the highest science award in India. He won it for his contributions to medical science.
He also received the Padma Bhushan in 2013. This is one of India's highest civilian honors. It recognized his great service to the country.
