Mahl is a small, unincorporated community in Nacogdoches County, Texas, United States. This means it's a place where people live, but it's not an official town or city with its own local government. You can find Mahl along Highway 259, not far from the city of Nacogdoches.
Mahl's Early Days
Mahl began in the early 1900s, around 1902. It started when the Texas and New Orleans Railroad was being built through the area. The community actually got its name from a local railroad official's last name, but spelled backwards!
Soon after, a post office was opened in Mahl. By 1904, a local school was built, teaching almost 60 students.
Mahl's Busy Years
Mahl was most active in the mid-1910s. During this time, about 100 people lived there. The community had two stores, the school, a blacksmith shop, and a cotton gin. A cotton gin is a machine that quickly separates cotton fibers from their seeds.
Mahl's Decline
After the mid-1910s, the community started to shrink. The two World Wars caused many people to move away. By the 1950s, the school and the last few businesses in Mahl had closed down. In 1990, records showed that only one family still lived in the area known as Mahl.
Education in Mahl
Today, the Central Heights Independent School District provides education for the one household that lives in Mahl.
