Dr. Mahogany L. Browne (born Lesley Tims in 1976) is an American poet, writer, and teacher. She helps organize events and projects, too. She is known for her powerful words and for helping other writers. In July 2021, she became the very first poet-in-residence at Lincoln Center in New York City. This means she was a special poet who worked there.

About Dr. Mahogany L. Browne
Dr. Mahogany L. Browne grew up in Oakland, California. In 1999, she moved to Brooklyn, New York. She had not planned to stay in New York forever. But after a summer program at Pratt Institute, she decided to make New York her home.
Her Work in Poetry
For thirteen years, Dr. Browne was very important at the Nuyorican Poets Café. This famous place in Lower Manhattan is known for poetry. She was the Friday Night Slam curator and Poetry Program director. This means she helped choose poets and organize poetry events.
In 2019, Dr. Browne worked at her old school, Pratt Institute. She was the program coordinator for the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement there. She also taught classes as a visiting instructor.
Current Roles and Achievements
Today, Dr. Browne is the executive director at Bowery Poetry Club. This club was started in 2003 by Bob Holman. She is also the artistic director at Urban Word NYC. This group helps young people with poetry. She is the Poetry Coordinator at St. Francis College as well.
Dr. Browne has written many books. Some of these are for children. She has also written plays, articles, and made audio recordings. She started her own publishing company called Penmanship Books. She has won many awards and special grants. One of these is a fellowship from the Art for Justice Fund. A fellowship is like a special award that helps someone do their work. The Academy of American Poets has shared many of her essays online.
Awards and Honors
In 2019, Dr. Browne received a SWACC! Focus Fellowship. This award is given to spoken word artists. It honors those who have worked hard to build communities through their creative work.
She was also nominated for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work – Poetry. Being nominated means she was chosen as one of the best in that category.
