Dr. Mahogany L. Browne (born Lesley Tims in 1976) is an amazing American poet, writer, and educator. She is known for her powerful words and for helping young people find their voices through poetry. In July 2021, Dr. Browne became the very first poet-in-residence at Lincoln Center in New York City, which is a huge honor!
About Her Life
Mahogany L. Browne was born and grew up in Oakland, California. In 1999, she moved to Brooklyn, New York. She had only planned to stay for a summer program at Pratt Institute. But she loved it so much that she decided to make New York her permanent home.
Dr. Browne worked for thirteen years at the Nuyorican Poets Café in Lower Manhattan. There, she was the Friday Night Slam curator and Poetry Program director. This means she helped organize and run the popular poetry events. In 2019, she also helped lead the Black Lives Matter (BLM) program at her old school, Pratt Institute. She also taught classes there.
Today, Dr. Browne is the executive director at the Bowery Poetry Club. She is also the artistic director at Urban Word NYC, an organization that helps young writers. She teaches poetry at St. Francis College too. Dr. Browne has written many books, including wonderful children's books. She has also written plays, articles, and recorded her poetry. She even started her own publishing company called Penmanship Books! She has received many awards, including a special fellowship from the Art for Justice Fund.

SWACC! Focus Fellowship
In 2019, she received a SWACC! Focus Fellowship. This award is given to spoken word poets who have spent their lives building communities through their creative work. It recognizes how she brings people together with her poetry.
NAACP Image Award Nomination
She was also nominated for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work – Poetry. This award celebrates excellent books and writing, showing how important her poetry is.
