Maia Wojciechowska (born August 7, 1927 – died June 13, 2002) was a Polish-American writer. She was famous for writing books for children and young adults. Her first few books were published under her married name, Maia Rodman.
About Her Life
Maia Wojciechowska was born in Warsaw, Poland. She went to school in Poland, France, and England. When Poland was invaded in 1939, her family moved to France. There, she attended many different schools. In 1942, they moved to California, USA.
Maia Wojciechowska married Selden Rodman in 1950. They had one daughter named Oriana. Later, she lived in New Jersey with her adopted daughter, Leonara. Maia Wojciechowska passed away in Mahwah, New Jersey, at the age of 74.
Awards and Recognition
In 1965, Maia Wojciechowska won a very special award. Her book Shadow of a Bull (published in 1964) won the Newbery Medal. This award is given to the best book for American children published that year. Shadow of a Bull is about a Spanish boy who is expected to become a bullfighter. The German version of this book also won an award called the Deutscher Jugendbuchpreis in 1968. This award is for youth books in Germany.
