Maj Sjöwall (born September 25, 1935 – died April 29, 2020) was a Swedish writer and translator. She is most famous for her detective novels. She wrote these books with her partner, Per Wahlöö. Their stories are about a police detective named Martin Beck.
Life and Work
Maj Sjöwall was born in Stockholm, Sweden. Her parents were Margit Trobäck and Will Sjöwall. After finishing school, she worked for different publishers. This gave her a good understanding of books.
Creating the Martin Beck Series
Maj Sjöwall is best known for her work with Per Wahlöö. Together, they wrote a series of ten crime novels. These books feature a police detective named Martin Beck. He solves crimes in Stockholm. Their books helped create a popular style of crime fiction called Nordic noir. This style is known for its dark and realistic stories.
In 1971, one of their books won a big award. The Laughing Policeman won an Edgar Award for Best Novel. This award is given by the Mystery Writers of America. The book was even made into a movie. The film starred Walter Matthau. In 2013, Maj Sjöwall also received the Lenin Award.
Work After Per Wahlöö
After Per Wahlöö passed away in 1975, Maj Sjöwall continued her career. She worked as a translator. She also wrote articles for magazines. She even wrote other books on her own. In 1989, she published Dansk Intermezzo with Danish author Bjarne Nielsen. In 1990, she wrote the thriller Kvinnan som liknade Greta Garbo with Tomas Ross.

Maj Sjöwall had a long relationship with her writing partner, Per Wahlöö. They were together for 13 years. This partnership lasted until his death in 1975. Maj Sjöwall passed away on April 29, 2020. She was 84 years old.
