The Majestic Theatre is a historic building in Midtown Detroit, Michigan. You can find it on Woodward Avenue. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.
Today, the theatre is mostly a place for live music. It has many different concerts in three areas: The Majestic, The Majestic Cafe, and The Magic Stick.
History of The Majestic Theatre
The Majestic Theatre first opened its doors on April 1, 1915. It was designed by a famous architect named C. Howard Crane. When it first opened, it could seat 1,651 people. This made it the largest theatre in the world built just for showing movies! Its outside looked like an old Italian building.
In 1934, a part of the theatre's front was removed. This happened because Woodward Avenue was made wider. The whole front of the building was then redesigned. It got a cool new look called Art Deco. This new design was made by the company Bennett & Straight. The theatre now has the biggest Art Deco metal panel front in the Detroit area.
After some time, the theatre closed down. The building was used as a church for a while. Later, it became a place for taking photos. It was empty for ten years before its current owner bought it in 1984.
There's a story that the famous magician Harry Houdini gave his last show here. People say it was on Halloween night in 1926. But this is actually a myth! Houdini's last show was at the Garrick Theatre in Detroit. He passed away a few days later on October 31, 1926.
On October 25, 2019, The Majestic Theatre showed off its new sign facing Woodward Avenue. This new sign is part of a bigger plan to fix up the building. The owners said they would spend $1,000,000 on these updates. The Majestic Theatre was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.
What The Majestic Theatre Is Used For Today
The Majestic Theatre is part of a bigger group called the Majestic Theatre Center. This center also includes a bowling alley called Garden Bowl. There's also The Majestic Cafe, The Magic Stick, and a pizza place called Sgt. Pepperoni's. All these places work together to offer fun and entertainment.
