Universidad Mayor is a private university located in Santiago, Chile. It was started in 1988. A private university means it is not run by the government. It is a place where students can go to learn many different subjects after finishing high school.
How Universidad Mayor Started
Universidad Mayor opened its doors in 1988. At first, it offered courses in Architecture and Engineering. The engineering courses included three main areas: Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, and Electronics Engineering. These first classes were held at its main campus in Américo Vespucio.
Growing with New Programs
Over the next few years, Universidad Mayor grew quickly. It became the first private university in Chile to offer some special programs. In 1989, it started courses in Agronomy and Forest Engineering. Agronomy is about farming and growing crops, while Forest Engineering deals with forests and trees.
Later, in 1991, it added Veterinary Medicine, which is about caring for animals. In 1997, it began offering Dentistry, for students who want to become dentists. By 1998, it even had a program for doctors to get more advanced training.
What is Accreditation?
Universidad Mayor is officially "accredited" by the United States Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). Being accredited means that an independent group has checked the university and confirmed that it meets high standards for teaching and learning. It shows that the education students receive there is good quality and recognized by others.
