Makar Grigori Yekmalyan was an important Armenian composer. He was born on February 2, 1856, in a city called Vagharshapat, Armenia. He later passed away on March 6, 1905, in Tiflis (which is now Tbilisi, Georgia).
Makar Yekmalyan's Life Story
Makar Yekmalyan began his musical studies at the Echmiadzin seminary in Armenia. He was very talented and continued his education in St Petersburg, Russia. There, he had the chance to learn from a very famous composer, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
After finishing his studies, Yekmalyan became a music teacher. He taught music in Tbilisi, which was known as Tiflis at that time. He lived and worked there until his death in 1905.
What Was His Most Famous Work?
Makar Yekmalyan's most well-known musical piece is called the Patarag. This word means "Divine Liturgy" in the Armenian language. The Patarag is a special musical setting for the church service of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
Yekmalyan finished composing the Patarag in 1892. He created it in different versions for various musical groups. The Patarag was first printed and shared in Leipzig, Germany, in 1896. It is still a very important part of Armenian church music today.
