Malcolm Lawrence Pascoe (born 31 March 1933 – died 24 August 2020) was a famous Australian rules player and coach. He played 94 senior games for the Essendon Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) from 1953 to 1958. Later, he played 177 senior games for the Hobart Football Club in Tasmania from 1959 to 1966. Mal Pascoe was also a successful captain-coach for Hobart from 1959 to 1965. He coached them again from 1978 to 1979.

Mal Pascoe's Early Life
Malcolm Lawrence Pascoe was born on 31 March 1933. He got married to Kay Alison Forbes in 1955. Later, in 1978, he married Elaine Burrows, and they had a daughter named Samantha.
Playing for Essendon
Mal Pascoe joined the Essendon Football Club when he was just 15 years old. He worked his way up through their junior teams, playing for the under-19s and then the reserves. He played his first senior game in 1953.
Rising Through the Ranks
In 1952, Mal Pascoe was part of the Essendon reserves team that won the premiership. This team was very talented, and most of its players went on to play for the senior Essendon team. Being part of this successful team showed that Mal had a lot of potential.
Senior Career Highlights
When he played for the senior Essendon team, Mal Pascoe was often a "ruck-rover." This means he helped the main ruckman and also played as a midfielder. He was known for being great at catching the ball overhead. He was also a brave defender and one of the best at kicking the ball using a "drop kick" style.
Mal Pascoe played his first senior game on 20 June 1953. He played as a full-back against Hawthorn. Essendon won that game, and Mal played well enough to keep his spot in the team. He played in all the remaining games of the 1953 season.
During his time at Essendon, he played 94 senior games and kicked 41 goals. He was part of the team that reached the Grand Final in 1957.
Becoming a Star in Tasmania
After leaving Essendon in 1958, Mal Pascoe moved to Tasmania. He became the coach of the Hobart Football Club in 1959. This was a big move, and he quickly showed how talented he was.
Instant Success as Coach
In his very first year in Tasmania (1959), Mal Pascoe had an amazing season:
- His team, Hobart, won the TANFL premiership. He was both the captain and the coach.
- Hobart also won the Tasmanian State Grand Final, proving they were the best team in the whole state.
- Mal Pascoe was chosen to play for the Tasmanian state team.
- He switched from playing in defense to playing in attack and became the leading goal-kicker in the league with 75 goals.
- He won the William Leitch Medal, which is given to the league's best and fairest player.
Mal Pascoe played for Hobart from 1959 to 1966. He was the captain-coach until 1965. Under his coaching, Hobart won three TANFL premierships: in 1959, 1960, and 1963. He later returned to coach Hobart again in 1978 and 1979.
He played a total of 177 senior games for Hobart, scoring 341 goals. His last game was the 1966 Grand Final, where Hobart won by just one point!

Hobart's Best Team
In 2002, Mal Pascoe was chosen as the first ruckman in Hobart's official "Best Team (1947 to 2002)." This shows how highly he was regarded by the club.
Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame
On 3 July 2015, Mal Pascoe was honored by being inducted into the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame. This is a special award for players and coaches who have made a huge difference to football in Tasmania.
