Malcolm Lockheed (born Malcolm Loughead; November 11, 1886 – August 12, 1958) was an American engineer who loved to invent things. He was a pioneer in the world of aviation. Along with his brother, Allan Loughead (who later changed his name to Allan Lockheed), he started a company that would become very famous: the Lockheed Corporation. This company has built many important airplanes over the years.
Life of Malcolm Lockheed
Malcolm Loughead was born in Niles, California. His parents were Flora and John Loughead. He had a half-brother named Victor, a sister named Hope, and his brother Allan Lockheed.
Malcolm was not just interested in airplanes. He also invented the very first hydraulic brakes in 1917. These special brakes use liquid pressure to help stop vehicles. They were first used in the Duesenberg Model A car in 1921. This invention made cars much safer!
In 1919, Malcolm and his brother Allan received a special award. It was called the Order of the Golden Crown. This award was given to them by King Albert of Belgium. It was a big honor for their work and inventions.
