Mallett Hall is a special old building in Lee, Maine. It used to be a hotel! It was built way back in 1889. This building is important because it's one of the few country hotels from that time still standing in rural Maine.
Today, the local historical society owns Mallett Hall. They use it for community events and gatherings. Because of its history, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

What Does Mallett Hall Look Like?
Mallett Hall is on the north side of Lee Road. It's close to Lee Academy in the middle of this quiet community. It's a long, rectangular building made of wood. It has two floors and a sloped roof. The foundation is made of strong granite.
The Front of the Building
The front of the building faces south and isn't perfectly even. On the right side of the main door, there's a large picture window and a regular window. To the left of the door, there are two more windows. On the second floor, there are six windows. A porch wraps around the front and the right side of the building.
Inside Mallett Hall
The first floor of the hotel had public areas. This included a dining room, a kitchen, and a large open hallway. Upstairs, there were originally four bedrooms. There was also a big dance hall! In the 1930s, this dance hall was changed into more bedrooms, like a dormitory.
The History of Mallett Hall
Mallett Hall was built in 1889 by a man named James Mallett. He wanted to create a small hotel for people traveling along what is now Route 6. This road was once the main route between Lincoln, Maine (where the nearest train station was) and Fredericton, New Brunswick.
Who Owned the Hotel?
Members of the Mallett family ran the hotel for many years. They operated it under different names until the 1920s.
Changes Over the Years
In 1930, Lee Academy bought the building. They turned the dance hall into dormitory rooms for students. Later, in 1975, the building was changed again to have apartment units. Finally, in 1993, the building was given to the local historical society. They worked to restore it and bring it back to its original charm.
