Mallett Hall is an important building in Pownal, Maine. It serves as the town hall, which is like the main office for the local government. This special building was constructed in 1886. It stands out because of its unique design, called Colonial Revival style. In 1991, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places because of its interesting architecture.

What is Mallett Hall?

Mallett Hall is located in Pownal, Maine. You can find it on the east side of Hallowell Road, also known as Maine State Route 9. It's just north of Dyer Road. The building is a two-and-a-half story structure made of wood. It has a pointed roof and a strong granite base.

A Look at Its Design

The front of Mallett Hall looks very balanced. It has a part that sticks out slightly in the middle. This central part is surrounded by windows on both sides. The main entrance has two doors. These doors are framed by tall, thin columns called pilasters. Above the doors, there's a window and a triangular shape called a pediment.

On the second floor, right above the entrance, there's a large, fancy window. It's called a Palladian window. The part of the building that sticks out has its own triangular roof. This roof has a round window built into it. Inside, the most impressive part is a grand staircase in the middle. This staircase leads up to a big room on the second floor. This room is used as an auditorium.

Its Story and Purpose

Mallett Hall was built in 1886. It is one of the most detailed buildings in the small town of Pownal. We don't know who designed it for sure. Some people think it might have been Francis Fassett, an architect from Portland, Maine.

Besides being the town's main office, Mallett Hall has always been a community hub. It has hosted many social events for the people of Pownal. The hall is named after Edmund Mallett. He was a businessman from Freeport, Maine. Mr. Mallett gave $1,200 to help build the hall. He wanted to make sure the auditorium could be used by everyone in the community.
