Malton Museum is a special place in Malton, North Yorkshire, where you can explore history. It's an archaeological museum, which means it collects and shows old objects found by archaeologists. These objects help us learn about people who lived long ago.

Discovering Malton Museum

Malton Museum first opened its doors in 1935. It started in a building called the Milton Rooms. Over the years, the museum's collection grew bigger and bigger.

Moving to a New Home

By 1982, the museum needed more space. It moved to Malton Town Hall. Volunteers, who are people who help without getting paid, ran the museum there. This building was rented for a very low price from the local council. However, in April 2012, the museum had to close at this location. The cost to rent the building became too expensive.

But the story didn't end there! In 2013, Malton Museum found a new home. It reopened in two rooms inside The Subscription Rooms. This allowed visitors to continue exploring its amazing collections.

Growing and Expanding

In 2015, something exciting happened. The museum hired its first paid staff member in over 85 years! This was possible because of a big grant of £87,775 from Arts Council England. This money helped with a project called 'Vivat Fido!'.

The museum also hosts fun events. It held its first Roman festival in 2022. This popular event was repeated in 2023. These festivals took place at the site of the old Roman Fort in Orchard Field.

Exploring the Collections

The main part of Malton Museum's collection comes from important discoveries. These discoveries were made at the Roman fort in Malton. This fort was known as Derventio a long time ago.

What You Can See

Archaeologists Philip Corder and John Kirk led the first excavations there. They dug up many objects between 1927 and 1930. These finds form the heart of the museum's collection.

Today, the museum has about 1,110 boxes filled with objects. Most of these, about 96%, are archaeological finds. This means they are items from ancient times. You can usually see about 4% of the collection on display at any one time. The rest are carefully stored and studied.
