The Malvern Wells War Memorial is a special monument found in the village of Malvern Wells, close to Great Malvern in Worcestershire, England. This memorial was built to remember the brave local people who lost their lives fighting in World War I and World War II. It stands as a symbol of their courage and sacrifice.

The memorial was officially opened in June 1920, right after World War I ended. Later, another message was added to honor those who died in World War II. It's a tall, thin pillar made of Portland stone, which is a type of white limestone. At the very top, there's a sculpture of a pelican. This pelican is shown in a special way, looking like it's feeding its young with its own blood. This is an old symbol in Christianity that stands for sacrifice and giving everything for others.

The person who designed this unique memorial was C. F. A. Voysey, a famous architect and designer known for his "Arts and Crafts" style. This style focused on traditional craftsmanship and simple, beautiful designs. The Malvern Wells War Memorial is considered very important, so it has been given a "Grade II listed" status since 1973. This means it's a historically important building that needs to be protected. Voysey designed only one other war memorial like this, which is in Potters Bar.

Interestingly, this memorial does not list the names of the people who died. This was a choice made on purpose. It was meant to honor not just those who died, but also the many local people who were injured or affected by the wars, even if they survived. Building this memorial cost between £800 and £900 at the time.

What the Memorial Says

The Malvern Wells War Memorial has a special message carved into its stone. It reads:

1914–1918 / IN THANKFULNESS TO GOD FOR VICTORY & IN HONOUR OF DEVOTION, SELF-SACRIFICE & GLORIOUS ACHIEVEMENT / ALSO IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939–1945

This message thanks God for the victory in the wars and honors the dedication, self-sacrifice, and great achievements of those who fought. It also specifically remembers everyone who died in both World War I and World War II.
